Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory of India. It is located in South Andaman district at Wandoor, 29 km from Port Blair. It was established in 1983. Total area of this Marine National Park is 281.50 sq.km. which includes 220 sq km of territorial sea water. This Marine Park made-up of open sea, creeks and 15 small and large islands, is one of the best found anywhere in the world.

There are 15 small and large islands in the Park with beautiful sandy beaches and creeks full of lush green Mangroves and tropical forests.

More than 50 types of corals are found in the fringing coral reefs in the park. Some important coral varieties found here are Acropora, Pocillopora, Montipora, Leptosereis, Fungia, Portis, Tubipora and Gorgonians.

Hundreds of colourful varieties of coral reef fishes are in the park. Some of these are clown fish, butterfly fish, surgeon fish, angel fish, parrot fish, bat fish and groupers. Tip shark, hammer-headed shark, manta ray and blue fin jack are also occasionally seen.

Rich marine life consists of variety of coral reefs, colourful fishes, molluscs, shells, starfish, turtles, salt-water crocodile etc. One can also view a variety of birds like White-Bellied Sea Eagle, Andaman Teal, Reef Heron, Terns, Parakeets, Waders, Swifts etc. Some of the important islands rich in coral diversity are Jollybuoy, Redskin, Grub and Chester.
